The truth is, speed is a critical component in the causation and consequences of accidents involving motor vehicles.

 

The Risk Assessment Matrix shown here illustrates a process that we all perform regularly when presented with a decision that could affect our safety or the safety of others.

In evaluating the effects of higher vehicle speeds, as with other hazards, we consider the relationship between Probability, the chances that an accident will occur, and the Severity, or consequences, should an accident happen. With an increase in speed while driving, both the Probability and the Severity of an accident increase considerably.
